Teaching Kids Good Dental Health Habits

Fitting good dental health habits into your daily routine will keep your smile healthy throughout your lifetime. Although your dental routine may seem like second nature,  you were not born with these good habits. You were taught.

As a parent, it is your job to inspire your children to formulate their own oral health routine. There are several ways you can teach your little ones to keep their teeth and gums healthy as they grow and mature.

Start Teaching Oral Health Habits Young

The early stages of a child's development are essential for instilling good habits and morals in all areas of life. This is why you should start educating your kids about the importance of oral  hygiene as soon as they begin to develop their first teeth! Start by cleaning their mouth and gently brushing their new teeth daily to begin building a routine.

It is also recommended that you bring your young children in for routine dental exams and cleanings. This helps get young kids comfortable in a dental office environment and reduces anxiety later in life. Exposing your children to these healthy habits early will prompt them to prioritize oral health throughout adulthood.

Support a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is one of the best ways to ensure you and your children maintain good oral health. Swapping out sugary, processed foods with fresh fruits, vegetables, and water will help formulate good eating habits in your children that they will likely bring  into adulthood. As a parent, it is crucial to lead by example; as your children learn by watching and copying what you do.

Keep a Strict Dental Routine

Enforcing a strict routine is the most effective way to formulate good oral habits that your child will carry with them forever. Dentists recommend that your daily routine should consist of brushing twice a day for 2 minutes at a time and flossing at least once a day. Dental exams and professional cleaning appointments should be made twice a year.

Your young child is more likely to accept this routine if you take steps to make brushing more fun! Allow your child to pick out their own toothbrush and floss to add excitement to the process. Another great parenting trick is to offer a small reward after each dental office visit.
