A tooth that has been damaged by decay or wear occupies a difficult middle ground: too compromised for a simple filling to hold reliably, yet structurally sound enough that removing more of the tooth for a crown would be unnecessary. This is exactly the situation where inlays and onlays shine. These precision restorations are designed to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible while restoring full function and a seamless appearance.

At Newton Smile Centre in Newton, MA, we offer dental inlays and onlays as part of our broader approach to cosmetic dentistry and restorative care. Dr. Walid Benaissa, who earned his doctorate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and completed the Maxicourse at New York University of Dental Medicine, brings specialized training in occlusion and full-mouth restoration to every case. Our goal is always to give you the most conservative, effective solution for your specific needs and thoughtful, personalized care that makes our patients feel genuinely at home from the moment they walk through our door.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations, meaning they are custom-fabricated outside the mouth and then bonded precisely into or onto the tooth. While they serve a similar purpose to dental fillings, they are used when the damage is more extensive than a filling can effectively address. Research published in the National Institutes of Health's journal Cureus confirms that all-ceramic inlay restorations offer strong fracture resistance and reliable long-term performance in posterior teeth, making them a well-supported choice for restoring compromised molars and premolars.

Inlays

An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, restoring the area between them. It is typically used when decay or damage is confined to the biting surface or the area between the cusps, without affecting the cusps themselves. Inlays bond directly to the tooth structure, creating a tight seal that helps prevent future decay from forming along the restoration's edges. Because so little tooth structure needs to be altered, the process is minimally invasive and comfortable for most patients.

Onlays

An onlay covers a larger portion of the tooth, extending over one or more of the cusps. It is the appropriate choice when damage is more widespread, but the remaining tooth structure is still healthy enough to support a partial restoration rather than a full crown. Onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns for this reason. Both inlays and onlays are custom-made to match the natural color and contour of your tooth, blending in so well that they are virtually undetectable.

What Materials Are Used?

At Newton Smile Centre, we use tooth-colored ceramic and composite materials for inlays and onlays. These materials are chosen for their durability, their ability to bond strongly to tooth structure, and their natural appearance. Unlike older metal restorations, ceramic inlays and onlays do not expand and contract with temperature changes the way metal does, which reduces the risk of stress on the surrounding tooth over time. The result is a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural part of your smile for years to come.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment for inlays and onlays is typically completed over two appointments. During the first visit, Dr. Benaissa will remove any damaged or decayed tooth structure, take a precise impression of the area, and place a temporary restoration to protect the tooth while your custom inlay or onlay is being crafted. At your second appointment, the temporary restoration is removed, and the permanent inlay or onlay is bonded into place and carefully adjusted for a comfortable, accurate fit.

The process is comfortable, and many patients are pleased to find that their restored tooth feels completely natural after treatment. If the underlying damage has also affected the tooth's nerve, we may recommend root canal therapy before placing the restoration, and we will always walk you through your options clearly and honestly before moving forward with any treatment.

Are Inlays and Onlays Right for You?

Inlays and onlays are an excellent option for patients whose teeth have experienced moderate decay, an old, failing filling, or minor fractures that have not compromised the tooth's overall structure. They are also a strong choice for patients who want to preserve as much of their natural enamel as possible while achieving a polished, comfortable result. For those also considering cosmetic improvements, dental veneers may complement restorative work beautifully to create a more complete smile transformation.
