Oral Cancer Warning Signs You Need To Know

Oral cancer is something we all need to know about as over 56,000 North Americans will be diagnosed this year, and of those, nearly 11,000 will die because of it. The key is to catch it in its early stages and begin treatment immediately.

Oral cancer is one of the most serious conditions a dentist screens for, and it is also one of the most treatable when it is caught early. The challenge is that early-stage oral cancer rarely causes noticeable pain or obvious symptoms, which means many cases go undetected until they have progressed to a point where treatment becomes more complex. Regular screenings performed during routine dental visits are one of the most reliable ways to change that outcome.

At Newton Smile Centre, oral cancer screening is a standard part of the care we provide as part of our dental services in Newton, MA. Dr. Walid Benaissa and Dr. Talar Kiladjian take a thorough, methodical approach to every exam, and that includes looking carefully at the soft tissues of the mouth for any changes that warrant a closer look.

What Oral Cancer Is and Where It Develops

Oral cancer refers to cancers that develop in the tissues of the mouth and throat. The most common sites include the tongue, the floor of the mouth, the inner lining of the cheeks, the gums, the roof of the mouth, and the lips. In most cases, oral cancer begins in the flat cells that line these surfaces, called squamous cells, which is why it is most often referred to as squamous cell carcinoma.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, oral cancer affects tens of thousands of Americans each year, with rates higher among men than women and most commonly diagnosed in adults over the age of 55. The numbers underscore why consistent screening matters, because catching a change in tissue before it develops into a full malignancy is one of the most impactful things preventive dental care can do for a patient's long-term health.

Risk Factors Worth Knowing

Certain habits and conditions increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer, and understanding your personal risk level helps guide how frequently and carefully screenings should be conducted. The most well-established factors fall into a few key categories.

Tobacco and Alcohol Use

Smoking and smokeless tobacco are among the strongest risk factors for oral cancer in any form. Heavy or frequent alcohol use significantly elevates risk as well, and the combination of tobacco and alcohol together raises that risk considerably more than either does on its own.

HPV and Other Contributing Factors

Human papillomavirus, specifically HPV-16, is increasingly linked to oropharyngeal cancers and represents a growing area of clinical attention. Prolonged UV exposure raises the risk of lip cancer specifically, and risk increases with age, occurring most often in adults over 55 and more frequently in men than in women.

Having one or more of these risk factors does not mean a diagnosis is inevitable, but it does mean that consistent monitoring through routine dental checkups becomes even more important.

What We Look for During a Screening

An oral cancer screening does not require a separate appointment or a special procedure. It is built into the comprehensive exam we perform at your regular visit. During the screening, we examine all of the soft tissue surfaces in and around the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, gums, palate, and throat, and feel for any unusual lumps or thickening beneath the surface.

Common Signs That Prompt Further Evaluation

Most changes we observe are entirely benign, but certain findings warrant follow-up. If we notice anything that concerns us, we will tell you directly and explain what we are seeing. Signs that typically prompt a closer look or a referral include:

  • Persistent sores: Any lesion or ulcer in the mouth that has not healed within two weeks
  • Color changes: Red or white patches on the soft tissue that appear without an obvious cause
  • Lumps or thickening: Unusual firmness or fullness felt in the cheek, tongue, or neck
  • Swallowing or voice changes: Difficulty swallowing, chronic hoarseness, or a persistent sore throat
  • Numbness: Unexplained loss of feeling in the tongue, lips, or jaw

Patients who notice any of these changes between appointments should reach out to us rather than waiting for their next scheduled visit.

Tools We Use to Support Screening

In addition to the visual and manual examination, our Newton Centre office uses soft tissue laser treatment technology that supports the evaluation and treatment of abnormal tissue when needed. Digital dental X-rays provide additional visibility into areas below the surface that cannot be assessed by examination alone. Patients who stay current with their professional cleanings and exams benefit from this consistent level of monitoring, which is exactly where early detection opportunities are created.
